OpenAI, a leading AI research lab, recently announced the availability of its widely-used AI chatbot, ChatGPT, for Android. After an initial pre-order phase on Google Play, the app is now live in the U.S., India, Bangladesh, and Brazil.
The launch of the ChatGPT Android version opens up new horizons for OpenAI as Android users outnumber iOS users worldwide. The Android app has a user-friendly interface optimized for mobile, making interactions with ChatGPT as straightforward as messaging a friend.
An existing OpenAI account can be linked to the mobile app, enabling users to view past conversations across all devices. Besides the free sign-up,research account OpenAI offers a subscription plan, ChatGPT Plus, available through an in-app purchase. This grants the user access to an advanced language model (GPT-4) and additional features.
Within days of launch, the Android version of ChatGPT surpassed 500,000 installs on the Google Play store, according to reports from data.ai. Following the successful initial launch, OpenAI plans to release the app in more countries, expanding its reach and availability.
Before the Android release, ChatGPT was available on iOS and quickly became a popular tool in countries where it was released. It has been especially successful in the U.S., India, Bangladesh, and Brazil, and similar success is expected as the Android version rolls out to other countries like Argentina, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, the Philippines, the UK, and South Korea.
People have raised concerns about AI’s future role despite the success of AI chatbots. In response, OpenAI, along with Microsoft, Google, and Anthropic, have formed the Frontier Model Forum. This industry body focuses on the safe and responsible development of frontier large-scale machine learning models.
Microsoft President Brad Smith noted that “companies creating AI technology have a responsibility to ensure that it is safe, secure, and remains under human control.” He hailed the initiative as a crucial step in bringing the tech sector together to advance AI responsibly.
Echoing this sentiment, Anna Makanju, OpenAI’s vice president of global affairs, underscored the urgency of safety practices to ensure that powerful AI tools are broadly beneficial.
The release of ChatGPT for Android further propels OpenAI’s mission to ensure artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. With the app now available to a wider audience, OpenAI is taking another step forward in making AI accessible and beneficial to all.
