Rising Temperatures vs. Your Summer Business Trips

Dan Nicholson

It's time to take a look at your summer conference plans and business trips, especially as we find ourselves in the midst of rising global temperatures. Here's what you need to know to keep moving closer to your goals and ambitions this season.

One of the challenges brought on by the increasing heat is its effect on air travel. As per Professor Paul Williams of the University of Reading in the UK, increased air temperatures affect an airplane’s ability to take off due to a phenomenon known as 'lift.' This is the force that pushes the plane upwards, and it is significantly influenced by air temperature. As the air becomes warmer, it expands, resulting in fewer air molecules available to generate lift. This means that for every 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius) increase in temperature, planes experience 1% less lift.

Why does this matter to you as an entrepreneur? The reduced lift means planes can't carry as much weight, potentially forcing airlines to leave passengers and cargo behind. In extreme heat, some flights might even be canceled, particularly at high-altitude airports or those with short runways. This could impact your travel plans and could potentially cause delays or cancellations of important business meetings or conference attendances.

For example, London’s City Airport and Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International airport have had flights delayed or canceled during heatwaves, leaving passengers on the ground. An airplane, such as the Airbus A320, loses roughly 280 pounds of its maximum takeoff weight annually due to warming, equivalent to one passenger and their luggage. This could mean less space for entrepreneurs and their equipment or products on certain flights.

Despite these potential challenges, there are solutions in place. Airlines are looking into scheduling departures outside of the hottest parts of the day, adopting lighter aircraft materials, and improving aircraft design for better performance in high altitude, high temperature conditions.

But even as these measures are implemented, it's wise for you, as a businessperson or conference-goer, to prepare for potential changes to your travel plans. Make sure you have alternative plans in case of heat-related disruptions, and stay informed about your flight's status.

With increasing global temperatures, these challenges might become more common. Being proactive, staying informed, and preparing for potential disruptions can help ensure your business trips and conference attendances run as smoothly as possible, enabling you to keep progressing towards your business goals.

Remember, while these situations might be rare and mostly confined to high altitude, short runway airports during summer months, being prepared will serve you well as an entrepreneur.
