“Forever Chemicals” Risks May Include Hormone-Related Cancers in Women

Dr. Mel Krüg

In the pursuit of understanding environmental triggers for cancers, new research paints a concerning picture regarding commonly used chemicals.

What Are “Forever Chemicals”?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, better known as PFAS, along with phenols, are prevalent in a plethora of household and industrial items. Due to their enduring nature in the environment, PFAS have been dubbed “forever chemicals.” These substances can be found in various products, from those that are stain-resistant, water-resistant, and heat-resistant to items like food packaging, dyes, and personal care products.

Unraveling the Link Between “Forever Chemicals” and Cancers in Women

Utilizing data compiled by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), academic researchers discerned a potential link between certain "hormonally driven" cancers in women and exposure to these chemicals.

Notably:

  • Women with higher exposure levels to a specific long-chained PFAS compound, PFDE, showed a doubled risk of developing melanoma.
  • Compounds PFNA and PFUA, other types of PFAS, revealed similar elevated risks associated with melanoma.

Additionally, PFNA demonstrated a link with uterine cancer.

Phenols, specifically Bisphenol A (BPA), were correlated with ovarian cancer according to Euro News. However, it's imperative to underline that while these findings establish a relationship, they don't necessarily denote causation.

How Might These Chemicals Impact Women?

The prevailing hypothesis suggests that these chemicals, especially PFAS, might influence women by disrupting specific hormone functions. Given that hormonally active cancers are not only pervasive but also represent a significant health challenge, understanding environmental triggers becomes paramount. Alarmingly, PFAS is so ubiquitous that the CDC notes its presence in an estimated 97% of Americans.

Conclusion

While the presented studies don't conclusively prove the carcinogenic nature of PFAS and phenols, they undeniably spotlight the pressing need for deeper dives into the research. As the scientific community strives to unravel the full extent of health ramifications of these chemicals, awareness among the public and potential regulatory measures by governments worldwide could prove pivotal.
